During an artist residency at the Footnote Center in Belgrade, I examined the changes in aesthetics and semiotics of former industrial plants in former Yugoslavia.
I was particularly touched by the dismantling of textile factories and the importance of de-industrialisation for the women working there.
This art project focuses on former textile factories in Wittenberge and Thalheim, Germany and in Požega and Novi Sad (European Capital of Culture 2022), Serbia.
I am using the architecture of the factories, as places of remembrance of deindustrialisation, as an artistic element itself.
Also, I am incorporating textiles created in the former factories – in photographic and video works at the places of remembrance of deindustrialisation.
I am allowing the old to melt into the new and to communicate with one another, and make the polyphony of the places resonate to the surface.
The project is kindly supported by ifa- Institute for foreign relations in Art and Culture.
